Activities Facilitator for Adults with Disabilities (Community Guide)

Position purpose (summary of position):

Create and share meaningful, innovative, and fun activities with adults with disabilities out in the community and at our two locations. Go hiking, bike riding, visit fairs and festivals, provide arts experiences, play music, learn something new, volunteer with another organization, advocate for a cause affecting our lives, etc. ACAP’s top-notch staff excel in creative programming and are encouraged to draw from their own personal interests and talents to enrich our program offerings. Staff support and assist our members in becoming their best selves in a community setting. We provide access to community resources and opportunities for meaningful experiences that are educational, recreational, and therapeutic. We’re fun, but we’re also committed to high organizational standards for service delivery to our membership.

Summary of Organization:

One of the public service gems of Waukesha County is the Adaptive Community Approach Program. For more than 40 years, this organization has helped hundreds of adults with disabilities flourish in the community. ACAP works to increase individual capacities, build independence and skills, and offer life-enhancing experiences through innovative and boundary-pushing programming. Experts in adaptations and advocacy, ACAP fosters an inclusive community in which everyone’s unique contributions are recognized and valued.

Salary

This position offers approximately $37,500-44,000/year starting salary range, depending on experience and qualifications.

Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop, implement, and facilitate opportunities for member participation in the community and within ACAP.
    • High-quality, educational, enriching, adult-oriented program development, curriculum development, and program assessment
    • Member progress reports and other administrative duties
    • Partner cultivation and other community responsibilities
  • Assist members in all aspects of their ACAP experience.
    • Personal care needs, including washroom, meals, etc.
    • Goal setting and progress
    • Enable members to participate as independently as possible
    • Respond professionally to challenging behaviors
  • Maintain high professional standards in people-first, flexible, creative, energetic, team-approach work environment.
    • Adherence to organizational philosophy
    • Prioritization of member needs
    • Clear, respectful, responsive communication
    • Team approach to problem solving
  • Coordinate care at ACAP for a number of ACAP members, facilitating their experience at ACAP and taking the lead in communicating with them and their care teams
  • When required, drive members in ACAP vehicles
  • Support and/or participate in ACAP fundraising events
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

The dynamic nature and person-centered approach at ACAP is a good fit for people from a variety of backgrounds. Most important to success in this job are a commitment to care, a strong work ethic, and collegiality. Staff hail from diverse backgrounds and hold a variety of college degrees such as Recreation Therapy, Exercise Sports Science, Music, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Education, Psychology, Nursing, and Marketing.

  • Preferred: college degree or three year’s comparable work experience in the disabilities community or a related field
  • Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Minimum: An education and/or work record demonstrating the ability to facilitate groups, lead classes, and complete administrative tasks

Required:

  • Valid driver’s license

Reasoning ability:

  • Ability to make good decisions with little time for deliberation
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical demands:

  • Regularly required to talk and hear
  • Required to be able to taste and smell
  • Required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms
  • Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Frequent lifting and moving of items up to 25 pounds
  • Occasional lifting and moving of more than 50 pounds (when assisting members in the restroom and in wheelchairs)
