Adaptive Sports & Recreation

Sports and Recreation are very popular classes at ACAP. We make every effort to get our members moving, whether at our sites or out in the community. Here are samples of what we do:

Dance Tracks– No matter your age, level of experience or ability, there is a space for you at Dance Tracks! Anyone with a love of dance is welcome. Express your creativity and explore elements of ballet, jazz/hip-hop and tap dance movements in a warm and friendly atmosphere! 

YMCA- One way to have a good time on a Monday morning is to improve your health and wellness by maintaining a weekly fitness routine at the local YMCA! Adaptations can be made. *$5/class or membership

Bowling- The thrill of a strike…The agony of a gutter ball…The joy of the bowling competition… This is the ACAP Alley CAPS!  Join! Bowl! Get on a roll! Increase your skills at Sunset Bowl. Ramps and team tee-shirts will be provided. 


Expressive Arts

Through artistic expression, explore your personal thoughts and dreams.  At ACAP, we do this utilizing all the expressive arts, including painting, sculpture, weaving, movement, dance, and theater.  Sample classes include: 

Mixed Mosaics- A mosaice is a work of are created by covering a surface with small pieces of different materials. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design will provide the foundation for using color, pattern, and design in your artwork. 

Swith and Strings- Come and join a musical journey using switches and stringed instruments! Bring your Uke and adaptive equipment, or we'll provide it for you. Play along to old favorites and new sounds. We will share our talent with friends at Avalon Square on a regular basis, and you will learn to perform for the Waukesha community. 

Sound Tracks- What would Darth Vader be without his imposing 'Imperial March' background music, heavy breathing, and deep voice? Explore the realm of music and sound in movies by working to create music and sound effects for films. 

Community Based Art- Are you an artist or activist wanting to use are as a vehicle for social change? Community arts, also sometimes known as "dialogical art", "community-engaged", or "community based art", refers to artistic activistiy based in a community setting. Work with a variety of media to interact or ignite dialogue within the Waukesha community. 

Advocacy

ACAP sees self- and systems-advocacy as an important part of community engagement. We offer a variety of classes to help our members learn about themselves and how to create the lives they want.

My Journey of Self-Discovery- Speak up for yourself, make your own decisions about your own life, get information so that you can understand things that are of interest to you, find out who will support you in your journey, know your rights and responsibilities, problem solve, listen and learn, reach out to to other when you need help and friendship, and learn about self determination. YOU can lead a self-determined life! 

Women Empowered- As you express yourself through a variety of forms and shared experiences, women who participate in this group can become examples of self-realized and self-valued women, despite disability in their lives. Adaptations will be made so all may achieve class goals. Take several projects with you and share some with the community. 

Bros 2.0- Build your band of brothers! Reap the benefits of having male friendships. Be with and hangout with all of your "bro" friends. Come together to volunteer throughout the community, learn about what it means to be a man in today's world, enjoy playing and competing against your fellow dudes, and develop knowledge about your own masculinity. *May have occassional fees

Community Service

ACAP members make many contributions to the community. Among them is our commitment to volunteerism. We give more than 1000 hours of volunteer service to area businesses, organizations, and groups every year. Here is some of what we offer:

Berkshire Shopping- Volunteer your time by grocery-shopping for Berkshire on Kensington’s in-house grocery store. Somebody’s got to keep the shelves stocked! Use an IPAD to follow along with the grocery list, using words and photos to meet a variety of people’s needs.

Hartland Hospice- Be a companion and provide a listening ear, solace and friendship to people in hospice-care. *Training and vaccinations required

Meals on Wheels- Be a part of ACAP’s ambassadors of good cheer by delivering meals to people in need. Pick-up meal baskets, read route lists, sort individual meals, and deliver to people as you navigate around Waukesha. Utilize assistive tech to meet, greet and more.  

CARE- Volunteer your time to help friends of flight at the Center for Avian Rehab and Education, Inc.  You will be working in close proximity to birds, which can be very loud, so note any sound sensitivity. Birds like to talk, so use your communication devices -or your own speaking-voices- to converse while you work!

Education & Enrichment

The Amazing Race- Get ready, get set, and let’s go on an amazing race! Ride the city bus as you navigate throughout the community, using assistive technology, maps, directions, photos and other clues to help your team solve weekly challenges.

LifeStriders– Lifestriders is Waukesha’s own site for Equine-Assisted Therapy. Duties may include cleaning horse stalls, sweeping floors, guiding and grooming horses, and other outdoor maintenance.*Transportation will need to be to ACAP by 8:45AM. *Clothing must be suitable for outdoor work. *Must demonstrate comfort/ etiquette toward/around horses

Eco Project- Do you want to learn how to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE? Joing the Eco Project as we venture forth to create a more sustainable community. This class will create projects, experiences, and opportunities to positively impact the environment. Are YOU ready to make the world a better place!

Successful Artists with Disabilities- Michaelangelo, Matisse, and Van Gogh were all famous artists with disabilities. Would you like to learn more about them and other successful artists that have or had a disability? This class will learn about how these artists worked with their needs and abilities to create artwork. We will also create our own artworks using their styles and techniques. 

Iron Chef Waukesha- ALLEZ CUISINE! Join us for a team-building competition centered on a surprise ingredient. Your team will put your cooking "chop" skills to the test. You'll learn as you go and develop some sophisticated taste buds along the way. *$2/Week

Learning RX- Train your brain with fund and games as you challenege yourself and your friends at Learning RX in Brookfield. Improve your memory, learn, and gain insight into how your unqiue brain works. What makes you tick? Wat kind of learner are you? What are the next bes steps to improve lifelong learning for a more meaningful life? *$15/class

Braining and Gaming- Maintain your brain fitness and test your skills by thinking outside of the box with brain teasers, also known as brain games. Utilize your critical thinking skills, use your downtime more wisely, and enhance your creative thinking, while also your sharpening your mind. Keep your senses and memory healthy while having fun! 

Animal Lovers- Provide much needed-socialization to adoptable cats and kittens at Elmbrook Humane Society, to help them become comfortable around people and ultimately prepare them for adoption. Also, explore opportunities through other organizations, such as the Milwaukee Cat coalition and the Humane and Welfare Society. 



Geocaching- Are you on the hunt for discovering something new in the Waukesha community? Get ready for the follow GPS coordinates, head outside and discover geocaching treasures throughout the community! Create your own geocaching treasure and coordinates to challenge othes in the community to get active and explore their city. 

Loosely Bound – Join in on the community book club in Oconomowoc, where you will read from the book (using technology) every week as a group. Participants are encouraged to take the book home to read independently, or get the book on tape to listen at home.

You & Social Media– Get your papers here! It’s more important than ever to have a group of Newsies to report the local happenings going on here at ACAP. Meet your deadlines by conducting interviews (using iPads and adaptations), snapping pictures, and documenting your findings in the ACAP INK and Facebook page.

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat- Learn about the four main elements of good cooking. Find common ground between all of the great food communities of the world! You'll learn that the key to good cooking is balancing salt, fat, acid, and heat. You will learn to trust your instincts instead of a recipe! 

Apothecary- Learn how to use herbs and essential oils safely and effectively for everyday use and to restore your self-resilience! Create nourishing, hand-crafted, and herbal remedies for at-home use and to share with the community. 

Professional Painting Techniques- Learn how to clean, prep, prime, and paint interior surfaces in a professional manner. We will learn by first painting rooms at First United Methodist Church and then move to other partners and community based prorjects. 

The History of Everything- This is a course that invites you to learn a variety of topics from A-Z. This interactive class will use games, quizzes, role playing, game show events, and video clips to hel pyou explore the fun and exciting world of EVERYTHING! 

Sports Journaling- Enjoy sports and writing? Always wondered what it was like to be a sports writer for the Waukesha Freeman? Now is your chance to discover what a day in the life of a sport journalist would be. Mesh together topics such as the Bucks, Brewers, and Packers. Writers will create a portofio of their work!

Landscape Discovery- Get your binoculars out and put on your waders, because this class has you diving deep into Wisconsin's native plants and animals! Learn about seasons and scientific properties of nature from Retzer Nature Center's naturalist and keep on exploring at home. 

The Bucket List- Do you have items on your bucket list that you haven't gotten to because there's not enough time in the day? Not only will you be able to check items off of YOUR list, but you will work alongside peers and support them in fulfilling their list as well.
